The Jazz Crawl for Charity was established to honor the memory of Patricia Lee Reynolds (1960-2012). Patty was the epitome of a kid at heart, and her fun-loving spirit shined brightest each year through her epic ‘Mystic Krewe of Vieux Do’  Mardi Gras parties in Birmingham, AL. She used to say, “If I can’t bring all of my friends and family to New Orleans for Mardi Gras every year then I will bring New Orleans to them.”

That is precisely what she did for 8 consecutive years until her unexpected passing in 2012. After a two year hiatus her nephew, Rick Tringali, was moved to resurrect the theme and festivities of her ‘Mystic Krewe of Vieux Do’  with a few twists here in Charleston, SC. Thus, the JAZZ Crawl for Charity was born as a celebration of New Orleans culture, a donation to less fortunate kids, and a tribute to Aunt Patty.

THE PARTY

  • New Orleans Inspired Cuisine & Spirits

  • Live Music, Artist Showcase, and Sponsored Raffle

The similarities between the Holy City and the Crescent City make Charleston a picture-perfect setting to highlight the festive traditions and artistic culture of New Orleans. This is most noticeable through the Second Line Parade that is lead by some of Charleston’s most talented jazz musicians. The moving block party of drums, horns, Mardi Gras décor, and Second Liners waving with their parasols and handkerchiefs contagiously inspires bystanders to join in the celebration. The Jazz Crawl makes for a one of a kind spectacle when you inject the majestic backdrop of historic King Street as the setting for the event. The New Orleans inspired cuisine and spirits recreated by some of Charleston’s best also creates a memorable culinary experience.

THE KREWE

  • Drawing for King & Queen of the ‘Krewe’

  • Live New Orleans Second Line on King St.

The festive theme and activities of the Jazz Crawl are inspired by Patty’s ‘Mystic Krewe of Vieux Do Mardi Gras Party’. A ‘Krewe’ is an organization of revelers that collectively host and participate in a Mardi Gras parade and Ball. Each year for the Jazz Crawl we kick the party off by randomly elect the ‘Royal Court of the Krewe’. Ladies receive a rose and the gentlemen will receive a Mardi Gras Doubloon. One of roses and one of the doubloons will be specifically marked to dictate who will be crowned the year’s ‘King, Queen, Duke, Duchess, and Jester of the Krewe’. After the crowning ceremony, the Royal Court joins the band to lead the Second Line Parade from spot to spot up King Street. The second line parade creates a unique atmosphere since the entire krewe is part of the spectacle as they move to the music, twirling their parasols, waving their handkerchiefs, and handing out beads.

THE TRIBUTE

  • Tribute To Those Not With Us Anymore

  • Instrument Donation To Students In Need

The Jazz Crawl is more than a Big Easy themed party in Charleston. It is a tribute to a dearly missed friend and her annual tradition of sharing the creative culture and vibrant festivities of New Orleans with friends and family away from the city. The impact of this tribute is felt long after the one day a year we celebrate, as the proceeds from the event are used to donate brass instruments to young students of music that can’t afford to own their own instrument. Each instrument is engraved with a serial number and donated with a certificate of authenticity that summarizes Patty’s story and encourages the students to return the instrument if they ever feel like another kid would get more use out of it. The goal is to keep all the donated instruments in active circulation to impact as many young lives as we can with the gift of music.
